“Trade, Land Acquisitions And The Right To Food – One film, One subject, One debate”
Invited by the International Film Festival and Forum on Human Rights (FIFDH) and the city of Geneva, Rubber in a Rice Bowl will be screened at the Swiss Pavilion of the Expo Milano 2015.
Companies have acquired more than 50 million hectares of land since the 2008 food crisis. The vast majority of these large-scale acquisitions took place in countries among the poorest. In most cases, plants grown on these lands are exported, contributing to the growth of international trade in agricultural products. This has important implications for small farmers and local people. Are international trade and land acquisitions threatening the right to food?
A public interactive panel with prominent experts from the civil society, the private sector, the WTO and a former UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food will debate and answer questions from the audience on a highly sensitive topic.
